CEPHIA launched

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is funding the Consortium for the Evaluation and Performance of HIV Incidence Assays (CEPHIA), to investigate the potential of currently available technology to characterise ‘recent HIV infection’ for the purposes of incidence surveillance.

The project is lead by the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA), and comprises a consortium including the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the Blood Systems Research Institute (BSRI), and the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA). A repository of suitably characterised specimens from various studies is being established, and extensive analysis of potential tests for recent infection, taken individually, or in conjunction, will be performed.
